Driving Instructor Training in East London
Start Your Career with EasyGo Driving SchoolBecome a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI)
To legally work as a driving instructor in the UK, you must pass the DVSA ADI qualification, which is divided into three parts. At EasyGo, we offer structured training for Part 1, Part 2 & Part 3 stage, ensuring you are fully prepared.
Part 1 – Theory and Hazard Perception
The ADI Part 1 Theory Test is the first stage of becoming a qualified driving instructor. It is more advanced than a learner driver theory test, so thorough preparation is important.
The test consists of two parts:
- Multiple Choice Questions
- Hazard Perception
You must pass both sections to pass the test overall.
Pass Requirements
- Hazard Perception: 57/75
- Multiple Choice: 85% overall (85/100)
The Multiple Choice section is divided into four categories:
- Road procedures, traffic signs, and signals
- Car control
- Pedestrians and mechanical knowledge
- Driving tests, disabilities, the law, publications, and instructional techniques
You must also score at least 20/25 (80%) in each category. Even if you achieve more than 85% overall, you will still fail if you score below 20 in any section.
Quick Facts
- Test duration: 90 minutes
- Computer-based exam
- Multiple Choice section contains 100 questions
- Questions cover the Highway Code, rules of the road, and instructional techniques
- A practice session is available before the test
Hazard Perception
- Includes 14 video clips
- 13 clips contain one developing hazard
- 1 clip contains two developing hazards
- Hazards may include vehicles, pedestrians, and road conditions
To achieve a high score, you must recognise developing hazards early and respond quickly.
Part 2 – Advanced Driving Test
The ADI Part 2 Ability to Drive Test lasts around 60–70 minutes and assesses whether your driving standard is safe, confident, and at instructor level. You must pass all sections in the same attempt, and you have 3 attempts to pass the test.
Eyesight Check
The test begins with an eyesight check. You must read a number plate from:
- 26.5 metres (new-style plate)
- 27.5 metres (old-style plate)
You can wear glasses or contact lenses if needed. Failing the eyesight test means you cannot continue with the driving test.
Show Me, Tell Me Questions
You will be asked 5 vehicle safety questions:
- 3 “Tell Me” questions before driving
- 2 “Show Me” questions while driving
Each incorrect answer results in 1 driving fault. Getting all 5 wrong results in a serious fault.
Practical Driving Test
The driving section lasts around 60 minutes and includes:
- 20 minutes independent driving using sat nav or traffic signs
- Up to 2 manoeuvres, such as:
1. Parallel park
2. Reverse bay park
3. Pulling up on the right and reversing
4. Forward bay park and reverse out - An emergency stop may also be included
You are only allowed a maximum of 6 driving faults during the test.
The examiner will assess:
- Vehicle control
- Observation and awareness
- Speed and road positioning
- Safe and legal driving
Taking a wrong turn will not affect your result as long as you continue to drive safely.
What to Bring
You must bring:
- Your ADI Part 1 pass certificate
- Your valid driving licence

Vehicle Requirements
Your car must be:

Part 3 – Instructional Ability Test
The ADI Part 3 – Ability to Teach Test is considered the most challenging stage of becoming a qualified driving instructor. You are allowed a maximum of 3 attempts, so proper preparation is essential.
The Test
The Part 3 test lasts around 1 hour and assesses your ability to teach a real learner driver safely and effectively.
You must:
- Provide your own pupil
- Use a suitable and roadworthy vehicle
- Demonstrate good lesson planning and risk management
The test now follows the DVSA Standards Check format and no longer uses the old role-play PST format.
